I had some correspondence with Shell about ethanol in their petrol, and eventually they came up with:

European Union and UK Government legislation requires us to blend
ethanol, as a renewable energy source, into road fuel to a current
maximum of 5%. We do not produce fuel without ethanol on a regular
basis and certainly not in a way that enables us to direct customers
to outlets selling non-ethanol fuel.

If you require any further information or assistance do not hesitate
to contact our customer service centre at 08007318888.

So, while it's possible that other oil companies have a different policy (note that Shell make the somewhat ambiguous claim that they are "required" to blend that muck into their petrol, but then say "up to", which includes ppm levels), I fear that this "no ethanol in expensive petrol" is just an urban myth, probably put about by oil companies desperately trying to sucker people into fancy brands.

And anyway, why boost the octane level?

FBHVC have just announced the first results of their tests on additives to combat a few of ethanol's worst effects.

Well you can, but absolutely no advantage unless you have very high compression ratio? Nothing wrong with ethanol! In fact, I quite like it! Save the World !! And don't waste money on Octane boosters or any other additives for that matter......
