gear stick rattle

Post by cadetchris »

been a while since i have posted as nothing has gone wrong with Primrose, until today.

whilst driving merrily along at the speed limit (the joys of the A1), the gear stick started to rattle quite alot and make a lot of noise.
They only way of stopping said deafening rattle was to told the gear stick, which whilst stopping it, vibrated through my hand and made is sore.

what causes this and how can it be either reduced or stopped?

There should be ant-rattle plunger and plastic bush in there - but the question is - why did this suddenly happen? Is the engine vibrating more than usual? Or were you travelling over a 'ribbed' section of road?

A close look at the propshaft joints might be in order.

its been present for a while, i just havent noticed it (it has been masked by another rattle from the window) the road was relatively smooth for the A1
as for the prop shaft joints, they are nice and new

Check the gearbox oil too...mine leaks a bit from the back seal & if the oil level is not maintained, the lever will start to buzz in third gear.
Top up the oil & it stops as suddenly as it started

Will almost certainly be the little detent spring and bush that has worn out.

Moss Europe show them as item 36 and 37 in this listing and only a few pounds to sort.

It happened to me on the way back from the south of France one year. Took a week after I got back to stop my hand from tingling having held it for well over 600 miles

There should be a rubber O ring around the selector ball on the end of the gear lever, if this is broken/missing it can cause the gear lever to rattle
