My friend has given me a few bits and bobs and this includes a rev counter so I thought I may as well fit it as I have it. I've read up (and searched on here) but there is nothing that actually tells me "where" the wires go to as such. I've never done anything wiring wise. Would someone be able to explain where I need to attach these to on the car:
green wire - coil neg (I know where that is)
red wire iginition - live (is that the plus of the coil?)
orange wire panel lights (I'm not too bothered about this so I'll leave it)
black wire earth (is that just a part of the car with bare metal?)

Re: Wiring a Rev Counter
Personally - I can't see the need to count the revs...... You need to determine if the 'rev counter' is set up for the same polarity as your car earthing?

Re: Wiring a Rev Counter
I just thought it would be nice to have as I've got it. It's a negative earth, 4 cylinder counter, have you any ideas on where the wires connect to?
Re: Wiring a Rev Counter
As long as your car is also neg earth - the way you suggest is probably correct. But it depends on the make - some replace the white/black wire connection from the coil to the dizzy with the black/red wires from the 'counter.

Re: Wiring a Rev Counter
I have an original Smiths' Industries instruction leaflet which details rev counter wiring. I can upload a scan if that helps you?

Re: Wiring a Rev Counter
Hello Mr. Morris,
if the colours you are quoting are the tachometer wires then you need to run a new wire to the coil negative to connect to the green wire, an ignition switched live which is green and will be found in the dashboard such as the input to the voltage regulator (note, not light green) which goes to your red wire and black to a good earth point.
The colours you quote do not seem to be those used on a Smiths tachometer.
