Brake help

When I press the brake the pedal brakes as normal and then disappears what could be the problem I've checked the brake oil level and it's a 1/4 full down the tube if I put my finger in there. Also I've checked the brake shoes and there fine I did try to raise the pads but couldnt find the screws to adjust them, my morris is a 1959 saloon so I though it might be the square holes but couldn't really see them either. And help would be great

The brakes are adjusted with a flat blade screwdriver - through a hole in the brake drum. Are you saying that the pedal is firm and the brakes work/slow the car, and then the pedal suddenly flops to the floor?????

Yes the brakes work but the when the pedal sinks to the floor then there are no brakes

Well - could perhaps be air in the system - but i rather suspect a failing master cylinder.

I've seen exactly the same symptoms several times, it's always been the master cylinder. You could try new seals, or just swap the whole unit for a new one - you have to take the old one out to change the seals anyway. As above, brake adjustment is by screwdriver through hole in brake drum. Remove the wheel, and rotate the drum slowly, shining a torch through the hole. You should see the screw - one at the rear, two at the front (opposite each other). NB brakes are safety critical, so be confident in what you are doing, or seek further advice. Also take correct precautions when working under the car, do not rely on only a jack.

simmitc advice should be taken,if you are having trouble working out how to adjust the brakes,probably one of the easiest jobs on a minor,then changing master or brake cylinders could be well out of your range,can you not find someone local on here who could have a look for you or guide you through the proceedure.I'm all for owners doing their own maintenance and even rebuilding,but messing with the electrics or timing will not put you or others at risk ,brakes and steering should only be touched if you really know what you are doing,even then it goes wrong now and again.
