I hesitate to get embroiled once again in the great grease nipple saga.
However, It is always more fun to go where angels fear to tread, Charles Ware told me recently that the top are 5/16 unf and the lower are 1/4 unf.
I aint fitted my new ones yet (flooded guttering on the house took precedence) because she who must be obeyed said it should.

There certainly not 1/4 bsf on my car as I have 10 sat in my toolbox which I ordered on the advice on this site

BTW top and bottom on my car with new suspension fitted are both the same size as I eventually cleaned the old ones and swapped them around, go figure that one...........

I did offer to supply the right beasties if you sent a pm dave, which would be no heartache as I work in Sunderland, probably not too far from you actually.?

The CW advice is wrong.........they are NOT a fine thread, and they are NOT different sizes.

Why not just:

1) Take the old one out

2) Check its size and thread

If it's missing completely, omit step 1) and gently try different size bolts in the hole. The possible size that you may not have is 1/8 BSP, which is fractionally over 3/8" diameter, but is 28 tpi (threads per inch), finer than 3/8 UNF (24tpi) or 3/8 BSF (20tpi).

Since trunnions may well have been replaced several times previously, is it possible that, over the years, different suppliers used different threads?

Just to be absolutely clear for anyone reading this in the future, the correct size is the one that fits. There is no single thread size that will fit, what is correct for one car might well not fit another. Over the years, different manufacturers have used different threads; and the only solution os to keep a stock of different nipples.

I also have a mixture, some at 28tpi and others at 24 tpi according to my thread gauges.
I did find one thing quite useful today, I dismantled the elbow nipples that I was supplied (that dont fit) and found the half I unscrewed (now a straight nipple) did fit. :D
so it worked out in the end.
phew! thats it on grease nipples for me, lifes too short.

The solution to the problem is never to throw away your old nipples, remove them and put them in a tin .....................then lose the tin :(

Then find the tin again, when youre looking for something else completely unrelated, but only after youve bought the new wotsit you lost in the first place of course.
