rear wing repair

I've just taken the rear wings of my convertible and boy are they rusty, the bottom 3 inches at the rear has just gone does anyone have any advice on how to repair this please ?

We bought some steel sheet from a local steel supplier. Cut a strip off and shaped it to the shape of the piece we were going to remove. We used the original wing as a pattern and through trial and error using a planishing hammer and dollies set to task.

Once happy with shape, cut out the old wing and welded the new shape in. Used rasp to finish, although lead loading would be the best option. We finished with a thin skim of filler.

It isn't easy and time and patience is the key..... and more satisfying than buying a new wing.

I did this job on my convertible and also on the four door saloon rear wings, for best results you'll need a shrinker stretcher machine, or borrow one. I'll see if I can dig out some photos!

To form the curved bottom piece of the wing, fold a rectangular piece of 1mm steel of the length you wish to replace on the wing approx 1/2" from the edge of the longest side. The steel should be about 3 inches wide if you need to replace the bottom 2 1/2 " of rear wing. Then shrink along the outer edge of the short fold to curve the repair piece to suit the wing. Use the repair piece as a template and cut the wing to fit the repair piece. Then weld the repair piece in, grind and fill.

Hi I would buy a new wing if you have not got the tools and have not done it before! Useing mig welders shrinkers and filling and panel beating is quite a skill. '#and if you paint and fit the wing your self will be enjoyerble.And still cheaper than garage labour.

indeed ,If you havent had good training or lots of expirience doing this will be very hit and miss,you'll spend 10 times as long and probably never get it to look right.You've got one of the desirable models which command top prices,a bodged up wing would drastically reduce the value,good second hand wings turn up on e bay and here ,much better option in my view.
