Just a quick question: I am looking to get hold of a starting handle for my car and am watching one on eBay. Invariably the paint on these is 'battered' or repainted............. and then 'battered'!!
What colour were they originally?

I've seen more than one late type jack and starting handle in black, just to confuse the issue! One came int he boot of a 1958 saloon, (wether it was orig to that car I know not) the other was of unknown provenance. One of them was also of a thinner round bar than usual, so even easier to bend in the heat of the moment!
Series 2s don't have the wheel brace / jack handle in the other end, but have a nice loose sleeve which reduces the wear on the hand!
To help answer the original question, I had a very original 1962 car which had a red jack and starting handle, so I'd assume the same for a '63.

Not really, one for the concours bods tbh. Just noted in passing "funny, never seen a black toolkit before" as I put it on a shelf waitng for a new home... I guessed it was a very late one, going by the thin starting handle ie: when such things were very much out of fashion and less likely to be used.
It seems that every variation and production change of the Minor had been carefully researched, and recorded which must see very odd to those involved in prodcing them new, when the main req was to just get the things made and sold. There was probably just a shortage of red paint, so the toolkits were painted black till the new paint arrived. We'll probably never know...

You're right of course, my car is in everyday usage, so it will never be concourse.
I just wanted to know so that I could give it a fresh coat of paint, in the right colour, before it takes it's position in my tool kit.
A few years there and no doubt it will look suitably weathered again.......................

That late starting handle on eBay isn't a very good design. On my S.II the actual hand-grip is like a moveable sleeve so it stays fixed in your hand whilst you crank her up.
I'm on the look out for a series 2 starting handle. If anyone has a picture of one to share (so I know what I'm looking for), I'd be greatly appreciated.

The bumper is off because whilst I can't go anywhere (big ends), I'm doing some rustproofing/painting. The stray wire is for the bumper mounted fog lamp.
I have to say that the series 2 handle looks more comfortable to use. If I don't win the one on eBay I might look out for one of those myself, though I don't recall seeing one for sale before...... (hen's teeth then)....

My findings are different. Over here in the States and especially on the East Coast most of our Minors are Series IIIs and most of those are 1959 manufacture. In those cars the handle and jack were black. I'd say red started in 62.
