oil pressure light

Hello. The oil pressure light comes on at about 50mph and then goes out again when I drop below 40. Plenty of oil. Engine sounds and powers OK. Any ideas. Easy G.

Hmmm - most unusual. As always - I recommend fitting an oil pressure gauge URGENTLY. It may just be a dodgy switch, fit a new one - or it may be the relief valve is somehow blowing open - although I doubt it. You could take it out and have a good look at it - see if there is any swarf in there. And - are you SURE it's the oil pressure light that's coming on - and not just the oil filter blocked warning light? That would make more sense - test by pulling the wire off the oil pressure switch - and see if that's the one you see coming on at speed.

Thanks Bmcecosse. Now I'm confused. I've always assumed it was the oil pressure warning light. Its green, on the bottom left of the speedo on a '64 van. Bottom right is the red ignition with the high beam at the top middle. The switch is on the back bottom left of the engine with a single Green Yellow wire coming off it. I do have spade conector with 2 green yellow wires going into it but it doesn't connect to anything - I've looked lots of times. Dark and raining. Drats.

Hmm -well I suspect you don't have the 'oil filter blocked' switch on the filter casing then! When you switch on the IGN - you should have the red and green lights ON. If you then pull the wire off the oil pressure switch - does the green light go OFF ? I thought you guys were desperate for rain ? Be happy!!

Hello Bmcecosse.
Don't be cheeky about the rain. We are supplied by Cambride water who have not issued a hose pipe ban so I shall water the veg at will. The oil light goes off when I pull off the wire. The other 2 wires (green with the yellow stripe) are connected to the one one the oil pressure switch for some odd reason. The oil filter appears to be fine and was only fitted recently so has done little work. I unscrewed the pressure switch and screwed it back in - don't really know why. Anyway took it out for a spin and light did not come on at any speed - not even 70 which I haven't done in it for a long time. I'm going to get a pressure guage and rig that up and see what happens. I'll run it in the meantime unless you think that that would be unwise.

We needn't worry about hosepipe bans or water shortages in the North West... why do you think Lancashire was the heart of the cotton industry? It always rains over the Pennines and in Manchester....

Even if there was a serious water shortage they would simply start pumping water out of the hundreds of old mines that are around here (we have an old mine shaft in the back field and several others within a mile radius).

But seriously, please don't waste water, especially when the majority of the World's population can't get clean drinking water.

Hi 'glee' - I was shooting in the dark re rain - you don't say where in the world you are! Fill out your profile!! I don't understand why you would have TWO green/yellow wires...... But if the light comes on with IGN, and goes out when the engine starts - and stays out - all should be well. Yes - fit an oil pressure gauge - it's the useful accessory you can fit.
And yes - snow on the hills yesterday in central scotland ! Very scenic....

Thanks for your help. I don't understand the two wires either - must have connected something else at some point. I've updated the profile and truied to add picture of van without success. How would you go about converting a minor to steam - you must have been tempted - a worlds first perhaps.

There is a steam powered Pick-up around somewhere. Boiler in the back, and the A series converted to run on steam!

WOW I did see a twin steer ERF steam powered truck at some mad vehicle rally some years ago,that was impressive
