is it natural for my engine to be very hot i know my timing is out, cheers

Yes, they get hot in normal use, especially on the manifold side..

How do you know the timing is out?? Check the vacuum advance is working properly - and if it is - then just keep advancing the ignition till you hear a little pinking as you accelerate in top gear. At that point - retard it slightly , so it's 'not quite' pinking. Running with retarded ignition will cause the engine to be very hot - not good !

i will try that ,could it be a fault with the carb ? the exhaust is turning red with the heat

No - it is likely to be the timing, unless the exhaust valve gaps are closed up and/or an exhaust seat or valve is burned?
