Series II steering wheel centering

Post by winger300 »

Hello,

Yesterday I took the steering wheel of the car (1955 Series 2), it was the first time I've had the wheel off since I've owned the car in > 8 years.

What I found is that the wheel had been placed out of line of the slot in the steering column, and obviously no woodruff key used. I imagine this was done at some point to ensure the wheel is straight.

I imagine it's not so safe like this though, although the wheel is a very tight fit on the tapered column and has been no problem so far. I'm guessing that woodruff key is there for a good reason! So refitting it I plan to do it properly.

Is the only adjustment for these cars at the track-rod end, to ensure the wheel is centered when driving in a straight line? and should the wheel be fitted dry, or is a little grease required? at present it is a very tight dry fit.

Yes the key is a 'good' idea..... I would apply the slightest film of grease. You should ensure the TREs are equally set on the track rods. The column should be splined at the base where it fits to the steering rack - so you can relocate it there to get it dead straight.

I don't know how the wheel stayed in place as the Woodruff key is the only way to locate it on the steering colomn, it must have been relying on the tightness of the steering column nut. The car could have gone straight on when turning at any time.
Certainly replace the key and adjust it on the bottom splines, I prefer it in the Y position.
