gearbox

Post by ian.t »

My 1098 engine morris minor is lovely, had it almost a year but i cant get it in to forth gear without crunching unless i let the revs drop first. Does this mean a new gearbox or just arepair job. Sorry i am no mechanic but hope to do minor works to my minor!

Make sure you have the correct amount of free play at the pedal and change the oil in the box (20/50 engine oil), If still crunchy it is probably a syncro ring issue and a good second hand box is the cheapest way forward....

Try double de clutching, cheaper than a new gearbox

Welcome to the forum! Crunching into 4th gear is most unusual - normally the syncro parts on 4th gear are like new even after many years of service....... You do need to match the revs when making any change - as long as it's not 'jumping out' I would leave well alone, and just work out a method of changing into top gear that stops this happening,

Just take your time changing gear. I have to do this on my S.II otherwise it audibly protests, despite a full rebuild a few thousand miles ago. It's just the way they are though I would've thought on a 1098 the situation wasn't as bad.

Get the feel of it right but don't loiter between changes.

Thanks to all of you that replied to my query! I have been looking through all the old receipts and a new laygear was fitted 2003 so gearbox has been stripped down before. Will keep using as it is and save up for second hand gearbox will try refilling the oil and pedal play first just in case. The replies have been very usefull thanks.

Remember you need engine oil for the gearbox!
