Trafficators

Hi all,should the trafficators on my `52 MM stay out when I turn them on?
The operating lever is under the right hand dash.They work perfectly well but only stay out as long as the lever is turned.Am I missing something?

Sounds right to me - switch on - trafficator out. Switch off - trafficator in.
Four door cars have a timer switch

Mine is a four door but as i say,they only stay on so long as the switch is physically held on.Let go of switch,they return.Do I need the timer?If so ,where is it located?

The timer switch is a different design to the on off on switch which has a warning light and is mounted in a bracket under the dash. The timer switch is a barrel with a lever switch at the bottom, Moss Catalogue P.68. You may have the wrong switch for your car

So what you are saying is that as soon as you release the indicator switch it springs back to the centre and cancels the trafficator?

My self cancelling switch went the same way, tried to fix it and made no difference. I replaced it with a cheap repro on/off version. Just keep forgetting to turn it off now.

Yes mike,that is exactly what happens.

That I am afraid is the limit of my knowledge of self cancelling trafficator switches except that replacements are expensive, Moss list them at £79.95. They list the 2 door switch at £84.95 which is ridiculous as there is nothing to it.

I have been having the same problem on my series 2 and have posted in the mechanical section I managed to get some info re the adjustments that can be made also the person at Holden Products was very helpfull and I bought some parts to enable me to try and fix my unit Rather than a complete new unit

Hi My Trafficators on my 4 door are not automatic and need to be switched off manually too is"nt that correct though???
But surely not worth spending time and lots of money on.But up to you if its niggling you !!

Dean ,what type of switch was that?

The manual trafficator switch on Jethro being mostly Bakelite broke up while refitting so I am using a temporary switch I bought from TomRoy for £28.
It is a green plastic type which illuminates when activating the trafficators and works perfectly well, although it does not feel as positive and heavyweight as the original unit.
I have since bought a white Lucas unit which I got cheaply on Ebay and it matches the original unit perfectly.
Just have to find the time to swap the switches over and I'll then keep the green one as a spare.

Hi Dean
On mine i have later flashing indicators as well as working Trafficators. Have you? (if only Trafficators for MOT i would say yes)
If your morris has just got the original Trafficators
I would find it a hassle to have to hold the switch by hand.
And you do need two hands free to change gear etc.
I just have to switch on then switch off.

The four door switch was on a time delay which fails over time. The two door switch must be manually cancelled. I am unsure of the operation of the four door switch, but would hazard a guess at it being a simple friction mechanism possibly combined with a spring which keeps it out for a length of time.

If I were you I would be stripping the original down taking the utmost care not to damage the fragile plastic and go about overhauling it.

I can't see why the switch was fitted to four door Minors, and if it was some sort of progress, why was it not fitted to 2 doors?
