Another headlight gasket?

Post by Fingolfin »

Good morning everyone, just had another question. I was perusing my now large collection of Morris Minor photos, both my own and others', and I came across this (from the beautiful Minor registered PAW435G):
[frame]Image[/frame]
See the rubber gasket between the headlight and the outer bezel? I've never seen this before. Is this common? Is it necessary? Is this the item: http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pro ... b71224e1c9? Is it only for the removable-bulb type, or can I use it for Mog's sealed beams?
I know it's trivial, but I got curious...

I don't think you are seeing a gasket - but yes there used to be a rubber seal (more like water deflector) in there back in the day!

I've only ever seen crumbly perished ones, should be worth and extra point from the concours judges for sure.

Looking at the Morris Minor 1000 Driver's Handbook (AKD680F)on page 23 I think this is a dust-excluding rubber see attached scan of section of page[frame]Image[/frame]

Ah -- similar to what BMC said. Thanks, that's very helpful! Now, I should decide whether or not to get a pair.

What is shown in the car picture above is a black headlamp clamp ring - not a 'gasket'......

Okay, then let's approach this from a different angle. What's the thing on ESM's website?

My S.II which has one sealed-beam and one replaceable bulb headlamp have chrome rings instead of rubber rings... I don't consider it anything to get into a fluster about. Probably all it does is join the glass to the lamp body.

The Gasket goes over the chrome ring holding the lens to the lamp backing ring, then the outer bezel goes over that and fixes with the screw, you will not see it unless you look between the outer lens and the chrome ring, as stated it is supposed the keep the water and crud from getting behind reflector, although in years past working on all types of cars with that type of headlamp never saw much of that, normally when crud was behind the reflector it was because the bowl had rotted where mud lodged on top of bowl
