water pump and fouling impellers

Fitted a new water pump today as the noisy bearings turned in to a leak.
When spannered up the impeller fouled and would not rotate,new pumps it seems have further protruding impellers,the solution proffered by the moggy supplier was to grind down the face of the impeller,those impellers are as hard as hobs from hell and anyway it all sounds a bit rough to me,
Anyway if anyone has an impeller that fouls a little lateral thinking works, dont grind it,I didnt.
Buy and fit two gaskets when you buy the pump instead,just in case, this is just enough clearance to keep free the fouling impeller and doesnt seem to throw the fan belt out of alignment any as its only a fraction.
I had to make additional paper versions as my local mog stockist closes Saturday lunchtimes.
Hope this is of some use to someone as it turned a 2 hour job in to 6 for me.

You have been given the pump for a 1275 engine - the correct pump would clear just fine......

Ah well, thats real interesting, I did ask if there was more than one model.
It was the reply that tickled me, having just purchased a brand spanking pump to be told to set to with a grinder
The impellers being larger, I wonder if that means a more efficient pump due to the additional surface area?
Either way Im pleased it works and the there is a noticeable noise difference.
Thanks to an old tool I bought years ago, something called a "transfer arm" removal and refitting was simpler without removing the rad, you may have seen one,a 1ft long belt drive in a chrome case, socket at one end and the ratchet at the other, Ive looked on the web for them but cant find them now, terrific for tight spaces.
Tappets next. 12 thou?:D

12 thou inlets 15 thou exhausts, thanks for that, next weekend now as the allotment took todays available time.
I think I should change my parts supplier though,as a newcomer to the Morris I need a company that can supply the right advice/parts really.
A replacement water pump shouldnt really cause me problems of that ilk.

Most of the suppliers offer a very good mail order service, so you don't have to use a "local" one. There is a problem that some suppliers simply shift parts and have only very little experience in working on Minors. The simple fact is that if the water pump does not fit then it is the wrong unit. You have already indicated that you will "vote with your wallet", and that is the best thing to do.
