A big leak from the bowl oil filter

Post by morrissey35 »

Today was a good day until i discover that my oil change is a failure...
First i 've drained the oil, then i've changed the oil filter, the old was a paper filter i think, that's why the new is a paper too...
I've changed the gasket, and normaly it's the same, but perhaps i didn't put the gasket properly???

So my question is, if i unscrew the filter bowl (to check if everything is right done) every of the oil will flow or just the oil in the filter bowl???

Please, give me good news....!!!!!!

I'm sorry, my english is still bad as my mechanical!!!

If you unscrew the filter bowl carefully, the only oil that will leak is what is in the filter bowl itself. Worth checking that you have assembled the filter with the parts in the correct order and with the face plate the right way round and, most importantly, that the rubber seal ring inside the filter housing is seated properly. Also, don't forget that there is a small rubber seal which fits in the hole at the base of the filter assembly. Which part of the filter was/is the oil leaking from?

Did you remove the old O ring (gasket) first?

A lesson lived is a lesson learned !!!

Everything is ok, i've unscrew the bowl, and i've decided to put the old gasket, and now there's no leak...

Like we usually say in France, " Tout est bien qui finit bien (perhaps when pigs fly)" :P

Cheers...

Morris bless you...

Glad it has worked but just keep checking the seal as the old gasket/sealing ring may not last very long. Always better to take the old one out and apply a new one if you can.

Bonne chance avec la fuite de pétrole et avec votre Morris Minor

Did you make SURE the large plate was present under the paper filter? It must be quite difficult to push the canister up into the housing against the spring pressure to engage the long screw into the thread in the housing. If it's not difficult - then the spring (or the plate) is missing - and the filter element is doing precisely nothing. This quickly wrecks the engine.........
