Was it REALLY clean before the etch primer went on? Sounds like contamination to me.

I think so. I how clean do I need to be? I went to bare metal used kurust then etch primed it. What do you think I should do now? Was thinking of sanding around the spots that lifted degrease more kurust, degrease, a spot of etch and fill it out with knifing putty then try again.i am a total amateur so any help will be appreciated.

Did you use paint stripper, and possibly left some traces?

Yes I used nitromors but the engine bay was done about 2 years ago, would time make a difference? I think I only cleaned down with white spirit before I etch primed. Do you think this is my problem? What should I do?

Go back to metal on the areas involved and clean well with wire brush then thinners, when dry apply etch and go from there. use a primer spray can first----(to see if there is any reaction)-- before mixing and using the primer filler proper.

don't use white spirit, you will have more problems if you do,it will react with most paints, unless you are using an oil based paint ,either buy proper panel wipe or use meths50/50 mix with water. But make sure the metal is keyed with wet and dry paper medium grit to provide a good grip to the primer.

As Kennet has said white spirit is oil based and will react with non oil based paints totaly agree with he says regards re preping the faulty areas. good luck.

cleaning with thinners will soften the surrounding primer and you may see the edges when you repaint,use50.50 mix of meths or even unleaded petrol .
