Replacing SU fuel pump outlet

Post by minorcab »

I recently bought a new SU fuel pump to replace an old broken one. However, the new pump has a push-on type outlet while the old fuel pipe that goes between the pump and carb has screw nuts on both ends. I found out I could easily replace the outlet on the new pipe with that of the old pump, making the fuel pipe fit.

Now, my question is really if there is any reason I should not do this? The two outlet screws are slightly different in their parts that face into the pump as you can see from the picture I uploaded with this post (hopefully it shows). This might be a dumb question, but I just wanted to make sure I don't do anything stupid (although I realize that if this is indeed a dumb question then I've already done something stupid, kinda).[frame]Image[/frame]

Can't see any problem doing that.

As long as the pump works well enough (car runs ok) and there are no leaks, I don't see a problem!

BTW, I had one of these go loose on me on the A1 heading north last summer! Strong smell of petrol.....
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

I will make sure it is tightened firmly then. =) Thanks for the reply.

Worryingly this was on a new pump! I didn't think to check that the brass outlet was tight on a new pump. Will do so now!!!!

you have to specify which pump you want. When buying pump for my sidevalve minor a few years age there was a shortage of correct pumps so to save time took later pump, the old pump on car was a mini one so didn't have the correct fitting but adapted the outlet with pipe fittings

The Mini pump is a PUSHER pump - a Minor needs a SUCKER pump. Mini pump won't work well on a Minor.......

Certainly not a dumb question, as I am probably about to ask an even dumber one.

Just replaced a faulty fuel pump (not sure which SU type on the car originally, but it had two terminals at the top rather than one) with what appears to be an SU L type. It is much longer in body than the previous, so I assume high pressure? It came off e-bay, and said it was Moggie, but only just got car and my first 1000.

Anyway, pump is working fine....but I now have fuel seemingly coming out from top of float chamber. Doesn't appear to be the pipe (but will change just in case), but if too high a pressure pump fitted, I assume this is the outcome?

Yes - HP pump will overwhelm the float valve........ Put the pump back on ebay.
