Which spraygun?

I would like to upgrade the spraygun that came with my compressor (which is a 9.5cfm model) - too much overspray even when minimising fan control.

Could someone explain the differences with different bozzle sizes, e.g. 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 please.

Has anyone used one of these? DeVilbiss SLG 1.3mm Spraygun, see link below:

What else could you recommend given compressor capacity and reasonable budget?

When you say 'different bottle sizes' I think you are refering to the needle sizes i.e. 1.3, 1.6 etc. The smaller the needle the less paint can pass through it. If you are wondering about Devilbiss as a brand then I would highly recommend them. I use an FLG5 with a 1.8 needle which is great for high build primers but not for finishing. I would maybe go for a 1.4 needle size for all round use.

Thanks for reply and sorry about the spelling which should of course have read 'nozzle'.

The model you suggest is rght at the edge of my cfm spec and I want the gun for a full car respray - would that be workable?

with that cfm you would be better getting any high volumne low pressure gun(HVLP),they are the gravity fed ones with the cup at the top,syphon guns need about 14cfm and run at high pressure which bobbles up the air. the hvlp gun run at about 20lbs and produce very little overspray because of the lower air pressure needed,produce just as good a job if a bit slower,but sometimes slow is the faster method in the end.The only thing to watch, is if you are doing the roof or bonnet,you can tip the gun too far up and risk paint spills from the breather,but if you use half a cup full this risk is minimised. or do as I do and wrap a cloth round the gun to catch any drips. It's your preference as to which gun to use, most professional paint sprayers will use a form of Devilbiss either hvlp or suction.
I've used both types in the past but my preference these days is the HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure). Try reducing the pressure at the gun slighty by using a flow valve and open the paint feed to full it may help you still have full pressure from the compressor but you manually reduce the air flow with the valve to the gun, it may help.

Kestrel spray guns...never heard of them you might say.
I went to a trade show some years ago during my visit I thought I would purchase a new gun.
I happened on a stall selling spray equipment,"would sir like to try this new range of gun on the market"...A Kestrel.
"Take it home free of charge,try it out,lend it to your bodyshop buddies and if you like it send a cheque in the post",the man said.
Everyone liked it and because I covered up the name on the handgrip they were convinced it was a far superior make.
I have a range of their guns now for different jobs...fantastic and a lot cheaper..they are an identical copy of your famous Devibliss gun..even the parts are interchangeable.
Just one more point the item you mention is called a Cap not nozzle.

Has anyone on here got experience of using Apollo (or similar) electric HVLP spray guns? Are they any use, if so what model?

allright for spraying emulsion onto walls and ceiling,but not much use for anything else ,there is no way of removing the water from the air so you get splatters on the body unless you use in a very dry climate,just buy a proper compressor the biggest you can afford.You can always sell it on if its for just one job.
