Paint colour

I know it's really difficult to asses colour from a photo - but any ideas? Third letter of VIN is 'S' - so Mid Grey? It's a 1960 948 4 door saloon.[frame][/frame]

My first thought was Clarendon Grey - very common colour for Series 2's and early 1000's but I believe this was discontinued in January '59. Other early sixties grey's were Frilford Grey (Jan 59 - Jul 60), Pearl Grey (almost white -Jan 59 - Jul 60 )Smoke Grey (although most think it looks light blue - Feb 59 -Nov 70), Dove Grey (october 61 - Jan 68) and Yukon Grey Jul 60 - Nov 61).

Of these I think Yukon Grey was quite dark like wet slate. Looking at the pic I'm almost certain it isn't Dove Grey. Outside possibility that it is actually a very dirty Clipper Blue (Jan 59 - Oct 61).

Perhaps we could organise a thread for a photo of a car in each colour so we would have an on line archive/reference of production colours and engine colours too? Probably wouldn't be too hard to organise if we all send an agreed similar shot - say front 3/4 view? Just a thought. Hope you can confirm the colour soon - good luck

Many thanks, my first thought was Clarendon too. Might see if I can get some tiny pots of various greys and try them out. Good idea about seeing other members cars of various known colours, but my 3/4 shot is rather 'iffy' as I've currently got no wings!

Red Interior - if original - certainly rules out Clipper Blue, as does the red pin stripe. The full shot does look more like Clarendon Grey. There have been a number of variations on this colour over the years as people tried to get close to the original. From memory of a very early S2 Traveller I used to own, the original Clarendon Grey was very blue based. Looks like a sound car - inner wings at least

Very true, and some successful welding done today on some rather nasty holes!
