I've sold a couple of minors that were capable everyday use cars but not great - these went straight to ebay (e.g. with new MOT) rather than on the club forum as I didn't want people jumping to the conclusion that they would be better than they were.
I've certainly never given a dishonest description, and am still conscious that the buyer can get a rose tinted view.
If the seller is a club member, this itself does not mean that the car is great.
Rather like an old goldseal engine - ignore the gold paint as it's meaningless compared to the actual condition of the engine (which may now be completely trashed).
Looking at ebay adverts, the clue is often what is NOT said. Rarely will an advert give a list of "all faults apparent" - ones that say "seems ok" / "good for it's age" or practically nothing at all about the actual condition are meaningless.
The last 2 (modern) cars I've bought from ebay in the last year both had annoying faults which were not mentioned in the listing, however the low mileage £3k car has given the same amount of hassle as the much older £300 car. The newer one also cost a lot more to keep on the road
We gave the £3k car a good inspection before buying, and bought the £300 car unseen.
Cars will always be a gamble, and inspection can improve the odds, but you can never really tell if a car was good or bad until the day you get rid of it.
Imagine needing a new engine after a few months of ownership? If the car then you continued to use it without any issues for the next 10 years / 150k miles then it could still have been a good car overall!
