Gearbox help again

I have just bought a sierra gearbox and want it installed what do in need to give the garage to fit this does the box go straight on or will I have to get other parts my engine is a mg midget 1275cc so I have the bell housing from the Morris and the sierra does these help ? The garages I've spoken to don't have a clue please help

You need to order a fitting kit from ESM, or Birm MMC or similar about £500 notes I think then your garage can fit the 5 speed box with this kit. It's quite easy to do but I can imagine a garage with no experience in doing these conversion might take a day or two to fit it.

Any idea whats in these kits the price is very high can the items be bought separate for cheaper

From memory - gbox xmember, modified prop, fglass gearbox cover, clutch support bracket, speedo cable and other bits and bobs that I forget. If you search for East Sussex Minors or Birmingham Morris Minor Centre they will have a list of whats included in the kit. Keep your eye on Ebay or this site or http://mog.myfreeforum.org/ as kits do crop up from time to time from projects that never got started etc... If you want it in a hurry then the kit might be the simplest way and it will come with instructions that your garage can follow.

The kit includes all you will need - this is what makes the job uneconomic for most folks only doing small mileage. And no -you won't get the parts any cheaper - it's pretty much a specialist kit put together for the job. Even then - I'm not sure if it will include the new floor cover for the larger gearbox? Ask the suppliers!

You do (or did) get the gearbox cover and BMC is correct the minor gearbox is quite adequate for everyday use but if you do high mileages especially on motorways then the 5 speed box is a quite a bit quieter. You can fit a higher ratio diff to the rear axle if you want to improve mpg and noise but IMO the 5 speed is better

And is the special bellhousing to fit the Ford 5 speed box to the A series engine included? It thought it was a few hundred pounds in itself! Does no-one ever use the Rover LT75 5 speed gearbox? I ask because it is a very strong box - and I have two spares in stock for my TR7!!

No idea about the Rover box but the bellhousing for the type 9 to to the A series does come in the kit.

Am I right in thinking it has to be the 'right' Sierra 5 speed box??

Hi BMC yes basically you need the sierra car gearbox but there are a few variations and it depends on the input shaft length (thats what I remember anyway). Most MM suppliers will be able to tell you which box or sell you the correct one.
