Starter Motor Question

Post by Mr Morris »

Just before I put my car away a good few months ago I was having some intermittent problems with starting it. It's always taken a bit of "churning" before it fires but sometimes I would pull the starter and nothing would happen, just a short "clunk" then nothing - the same as if the battery was flat. Then after trying a few times it would be fine again.

Does this sound like the starter motor is on it's way out or perhaps a good clean would fix it? Are there any specific things I can do to give the starter motor a bit of a service?

Check the battery connections, the connections on the solenoid and the starter motor and the earth straps including the chassis to gearbox. Also check that the starter motor mounting bolts are tight.
