Ask in Wanted! And there's a box of speedos in this thread - almost certainly one or more of them will be right..... http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=42906

Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and to Morris Minors, and didn't want to start a new thread when a speedometer thread is already here.

Is it ok to ask a question here?
I recently bought a moggie from a chap up in woburn, 1959 948cc 2 door saloon. Mechanically she is in great shape, engine is running lovely, electrics all seem to work (except for when i dp stupid things, but that's a different story). However, I'm having speedo problems. Initially it seemed to work fine, then as days went by it started acting erraticaly, sometimes sticking, sometimes over reading (up to 80mp and beyond which i know is impossible without a serious hill and some courage) it was making a sort of ticing noise that related to change in speed. Eventually it just stopped moving altogether. I've had it out, checked the cable which is almost brand new as far as i can tell, it spins freely when i run with the speedo off. Similarly, the needle on the speedo moves about absolutley fine of it's own accord. It's only when the cable i hookeup up that there seems to be a problem. I will also menton that the odometer stopped at the same time as the rest of the bits.

I think it's S/N 4406/00 and TPM 1525, but i can run out to the garage and double check if that sounds wrong.

Again, I don't want to thread jack, but also felt it seemed silly to have 2 speedo threads.

Thanks for any help you can give...

SN 4406/00 has a TPM 1525. I don't know why it is not the usual 1504 for a 948. For research purposes, what is your chassis no?
Dose anyone else have a 4406/00 speedo?

That number should be on a plate on the engine compartment bulkhead

The mileometer seized up - that was the ticking noise......... The little gears will be damaged - so beyond economic repair. Again - you need to look for a replacement either here or on ebay. The 1525 is not significantly different to 1504 or 1500..... so don't worry about that.

Oddly it seems to be working.
I had it out again at one last attempt to fix it, and I assumed to no avail. So I put it all back together, pushed the speedo cable back in to the rear of the speedo, and decided not to bother with the fiddly tightening of the nut as I didnt see the point.
Low and behold, hit a bump in the road and the damn thing started working. I haven't dared rouch it since. Is it possible the speedo cable was pushed in too far jamming the working? Or do I have a temporary reincarnation that will soon revert to dead status?

More likely not pushed in far enough...... You can test a speedo with an electric drill as long as it can run 'backwards' - ie for removing screws - and of course a small square bit in the chuck.

I'll try that in the morning. It was ok on the way home tonight, just wavering around a fair bit, but i guess it's only pushed in the back, not held in still, the mileometer isn't working, it's a 12 mile trip back from work and it didn't move.

Easy enough - just unscrew at gearbox and at speedo - and pull........ But first make sure it's properly fitted at the 'new' speedo.
