Wiring an Alternator??

I bought an Alternator conversion kit from BM, Im a bit confused about where the wires go.
Ill post a few pics from the instruction sheet, hopefully someone can help me.

1st of all the instructions say "original wiring(key start type)"
Mine is the original pull start, Dont know if this makes a difference.

Secondly, one of the pics instructs you to disconnect wires in the control box marked F, D ,E

The kit comes with a loom that connects direct to the rear of the alternator via a plug,thats fine, but the other ends Thick brown and thin brown on 1 o connector and on thin brown wire on a female spade connector, where do these go and what happens to the 2 connections that were on the dynamo to begin with.[frame][/frame][frame][/frame][frame][/frame][frame][/frame][frame][/frame]

Hello Mark,

the pull type starter switch will not make any difference but you may have different colours to the drawing enclosed with the conversion.

Disconnect the F cable at the control box and tape up, the opposite end connected to the dynamo. (Yellow\green wire?)
Disconnect the two D wires, one goes to the dynamo so tape that up (Yellow?). The second goes to the ignition warning light and is connected to the alternator ign terminal. This is probably the thin brown wire with a spade, their instructions say yellow however, but should really be a brown\yellow?
Connect the other two brown cables to the battery terminal side of your starter pull switch.

Tape up the two wires that you disconnect from the dynamo.
The control box is now basically a terminal box with the main feed to your ignition switch and one fuse (horns + interior lights) being supplied from it, so don't disconnect those.

In the 1st pic I had still to disconnect the wire marked F.

Hello Mark,

that looks OK.
The E isn't needed any more so that's fine. The only possible confusion is the two wires on D, identifying the ignition light one rather than the one that went to the dynamo.

In your case - 'solenoid' = pull start, and has no influence on this conversion.

i've purchased the alternator kit from ESM. the brown wires with the ring go to the battery, i know that.

the other wire with the spade connection goes where? to the wire that goes to the ignition light inside the car?

Just follow the diagram above. Have you checked the car is NEGATIVE EARTH ??

aye, it is negative earth. the earth strap goes to negative on the battery

About to fit an alternator kit from BM.
Unfortunately it's been shipped without the wiring loom, and they won't have stock of it for a couple of weeks.
But I need to get it hooked up in the mean time.
I understand the alternator wiring diagrams, it's just the actual connections on the back of the alternator.

There are 2 big spade connectors next to a small spade in the middleand then another small spade connector marked B+ on one side.


Am I right in thinking that the I should connect up one of the big spades to the power supply and the small spade to the ign light, and ignore the terminal labelled B+.

I've added a picture to show exactly what I mean.

Yes! That will work. be sure to use a thick enough cable for the main supply - and the car MUST be negative earth!

thanks, converted to negative earth last week in preparation for this.
planning to get something like 4.5mm 35 amp wire that should do right?

any idea what the b+ terminal is for?

I would run 2 X 35 amp wires, side by side - using both the large spades on the alt. B+ sorry, no idea ! But not required as far as i know.

just looking at the photos of SVMinors wiring loom from BM, there is something I am a little unclear on.

That has two wires going to the positive side of the solenoid one is the main supply (thick brown wire) to alternator. Where does that other thin brown wire connect to?

The other thin brown wire is going to the ign lamp, but from looking at the wiring diagrams I can't match up what the extra wire is for.

Am I missing something obvious here?

I Guess that the BM loom runs two leads from the large spades connecting both at the pos side of the solenoid. I'll do as you suggest with 2x 35 amp leads. thanks

I've no idea about the BM loom (and they have some cheek sending you an alt without a loom...hope they gave a discount??) - but 2 wires will spread the load and reduce volt drop.

fitted the alternator, and no longer have the ign light coming on, and voltage on battery increases as rev engine, so pretty sure it's working ok.

But the wipers aren't working at all now. Haven't had a chance to look at it in daylight, so will investigate properly tomorrow, the wipers were definitely working after converting to neg earth, so it must be something I did when installing the alternator.

The three black wires that were going to terminal E on voltage regulator have been disconnected and taped up separately. Should these all be joined together? Looking on the diagrams though these don't seem to be anything to do with the wipers unless i'm missing something.

Will chase the connections back from the motors and check tomorrow.

Put all the black wires back together and on the E terminal! Why did you take them off???
