I have a 1967 MM1000 salon. It's got a the 948 engine, as someone seems to have swapped one in. As far as I can stick my head underneath at the moment, the gear box seems to be ribbed. When I checked the level (quickly one day) I smelled the distinctive odor of 90 weight moly, and sticking my finger in tended to confirm this. As the box seems fine in driving, I'm thinking this was the prior owner's mistake. So, my plan is to drain it and fill with 30 weight as specified. Is there anything I'm missing here? Ought I flush it with anything, or just drain and refill with the right oil?
Thanks!

i've heard of, and used, 'molyslip' which is an additive supposed to coat the gears to protect them and quieten down a noisy gearbox or diff.
not sure if that's what you could be smelling. and now come to think of it, not sure if i should have put it in my gearbox!

Re: Gear box lube?
Gear oil is not recommended as it destroys some of the materials used in the Minor box.
Flush it out and fill with 20/50 engine oil. EP90 should only be used in the back axle

Better fill with engine oil - run it for a week - then drain and refill again to get rid of the heavy oil. Of course - it may have been put in there to disguise a problem.......... And best to NOT put Moly etc in a gearbox - the syncro won't be effective.

20/50? Is that what people find works well?
