Needs Advise for a Beginner

Post by begineer »

I've always fancied a traveler and are now in the position to afford one.

However as a complete novice to classics I really don't know where to start.

There is obviously a vast range of prices you can pay from around £ 3K on EBay for something a bit iffy up to it seems £ 15K for a fully rebuilt "new" one ( not really I think a "classic" but correct me if I'm wrong!) .

The type of budget I have is around £ 5K to 6K and was wondering if that is a realistic amount to spend to give me a car with some form of warranty that will not cost too much each year for modest motoring and hopefully keep it's value.

Any pointers would be appreciated and any recommended dealers.

You will normally get the best deal from a private seller and that budget should get you a very nice car. You will have to look at a lot though and it will most likely take a while to find a good one. You will be unlikely to get a particularly good one from a dealer at that price though, unless you are very lucky.

Welcome to the Forum! A Traveller really needs to be kept indoors if it's to hold it's looks and value. You will note the ad says 'only out in fair weather' . But yes - they are great cars, and properly cared for and maintained they do hold value well. Always insist on a NEW MOT (at very least 9 months to go) - and of course - RUST and woodrot are the enemy. Mechanical condition is almost irrelevant. Always check the cars for sale on here - but be warned - we are not allowed to post any negativity about cars advertised on here, so if you have any doubts you should PM some of the regulars on here for a realistic opinion.....

you can have mine for that money when it complete lol but you can get one for less spend some money on a good mechanic who can go over the entire car for you if you are spending that kind of cash then a few quid on an inspection can save you loads and stop you from making a big mistake good luck with it tho

I can say this looks like a VERY nice car - on sale from a forum member who has been with us for a long time. I would go and see it! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=42266

Ok thank you - it's a little out of my way as I'm in Suffolk but it's very tempting and the specs look good
