where is the best place/places to support the car when replacing a full chassis leg?

Most would do this with the car over on it's side ! But if working underneath certainly make sure it is very very securely supported under the sills -and add a pile of old wheels etc under the car just in case it does come off the supports.

I would definitely recommend putting the car on its side, ideally with a car roller or "rotisserie" - safer and easier for cutting/welding and with the car on its side, I just found it much easier to see clearly how everything measures/lines up. All the best with it!

If you have a 2 post lift it can be done quite easily in half a day or so. I had to go under the sills due to the posts dimensions. (yes the sills are not rotten at all)

If the front crossmember and central cross member are sound you can support that car here- and of course on the other chassis leg if you cant get the car on it's side.

When I changed Mog's full-length leg, I supported the car via jack stands, one under the eyebolt in the other leg and the other stand under the front end of the relevant sill, with a length of lumber to spread the weight a bit. It worked fine. The only consideration is that you MUST make sure you place the leg in exactly the correct spot, and that's difficult upside-down.

ideally I would have the car on its side but unfortunately I don't really have the time or space to do that.
I can't believe this car had an MOT. The majority of the chassis legs are made up of filler and bolted on bits of metal!
