Does the water pump really need to be serviced?

Post by BitMoreBlurred »

Hello everybody and Happy New Year to you all.

I know that many of you have strong views about using the Haynes manual, but I still like to use it as one of my sources alongside the workshop manual and this forum. The Haynes manual suggests "lubricating the water pump sparingly with grease" as part of the 12,000mile service and contains a section on dismantling the water pump.

You don't need to tell me your views on the Haynes manual :-? , but does anybody have any views about dismantling and lubricating the water pump? Is it worth doing every couple of years or so or is it a complete waste of time and effort?

Have fun,

Mikey

If it has a grease nipple then grease it. If not leave it

Hello Mikey,

do not try and dismantle the pump, you will probably do more harm than good. The mecahnical seal is quite delicate and easily damaged. If it's meant to be greased it will have a grease nipple if not it's a sealed non serviceable item (most are the latter).

Thanks, Mike and Alec.

That was my feeling, but I'm always glad to have some agreement from the forum :)
