Fitting new coolant pipes...
When fitting new coolant pipes a chap I know rubbed the ends of the pipes, and all water gaskets, with this red sealant stuff - I can't ask him at the moment, but does anybody have an idea what it might have been??
Re: Fitting new coolant pipes...
I'd say it was gasket sealant, I think the red stuff sets hard, blue is better as it's non setting. I can't think why he wanted to put it on rubber hoses, sounds messy and unnecessary.

I have just had to remove a load of this crud when changing some gaskets - round the rocker cover and heater tap, and it was like cement. I don't think there's any call for it as long as the joining surfaces are smooth. I'm doing fine without it and Staton Abbey says there's no need to use it!

Indeed they are! It's gone to a good home now, but during the last 2 years whilst at university I put 10,000 miles on the thing... it never broke down. It was a good car, v. comfortable but some spares expensive.
