Roof insulation

What is the best material to insulate a saloon roof? Would, say, 10mm foam be okay? Standard nylon foam - thought it might be good, won't rot etc...

Would that be okay?

I've the same question (as there's currently no headliner in Mildred) and had the same result with the search engine.

The best option that I've found is "proper" soundproofing material stuck firmly to the inside of the roof. It improves warmth (insulates, so less heat loss, and reduces drumming. However, the most significant difference is when it's raining - it is amazing how much noise can come from a few rain drops! Think about when you drive under a bridge in the rain...

Oh, and what would you stick that to the roof with - contact adhesive?

I think the fumes would be bad wth contact adheshive and also if you left it in the sun at a show etc would become tacky with the heat try silicone . I remember someone doing the lining about a year ago but searched and cant find it so may be longer

Mine was stuck with contact adhesive about twenty years ago, and hasn't shown any sign of falling off yet. The metal bars of the lining help to hold the proofing up as well.

Evostick Timebond. Work with the windows open i.e. plenty of fresh air. It allows you to manoevre the fabric a bit to get it into place before setting. Smell goes in 24 hours and it stays "stuck"! Sound proofing fabric is the best for this as it's quite light.

Anything that attracts/holds dampness will end in holes in the roof! Just wear ear muffs !

BUT - covering the roof with something will surely be a good idea to reduce condensation which runs down the sides and eventually rots the guttering from the inside out? I have found some very thin tray lining foam - does not soak up water but insulates, about 1mm thick - will glue that on I think!!

I've used the dense horsehair type insulation but found that a lot of the stinky glues softened in the summer heat. I'm now using this (also stinky):

It's held for a year but the car hasn't left the garage in that time.

As for foam, I think something denser works better either sound deadening mats or the felt/horsehair type stuff
