Unleaded conversion

Post by beno9962 »

Does anyone know how much it would typically cost to have hardened valve seats installed on a 948cc head?

Also if I were to run on unleaded, would I have to adjust tappets, timings etc and is there a particular level of octane required for this engine?

I thought it was a pretty unanimous agreement that if having to fit new valves, you may as well go for unleaded...? But untill it fails, leave it.

I suppose so, depends, I only had to renew the exhaust valves so in my case 4 new valves and a lot of lapping was a lot cheaper.

Exactly - don't bother! Set exhaust valve gaps at 15 thou and check/reset every 3000 miles. For a 948 - may as well keep an eye open for a later 998 Mini head - which is supposedly 'unleaded' - but in fact just has better quality exhaust valves - may as well have that head though - but don't pay more than a few pounds - sometimes 998 engines are given away free......
