Which thermostat?

Post by beno9962 »

I have a 1956 948cc bmc a series engine from a morris minor 1000 which I am trying to restore to standard spec.

I have taken off the thermostat currently installed and it is a smiths x85035/86 (86C/ 187F) thermostat.

I've cleaned it up and tested it in boiling water and it seems to work fine (It opened right up and then slowly closed after around 30 seconds as the boiling water cooled).

Is this the original thermostat for this type of engine or would it be recommendable to change it for a different type? I read somewhere that this type of thermostat doesn't work if it operates in a pressurised water system, however it appears to have been used on the engine.

It's perfect for best heater in winter. If it seems a bit hot in summer swap it then for a 74 degree stat.
