Update on Quote from Footman James not a Manchester thing

Post by leafie »

Came to insure my Traveller and got a quote from Footman James with a limit of 3000 miles. At £211.00 with breakdown cover it was almost double the price of Peter James insurance with unlimited mileage. At 49 I’m sure it’s not an age thing so is it that Footman James don’t want to insure a classic in large cities.

My Manchester quote was £900 + from fj, £300 from Lancaster (RH don't insure me because I'm young)

Thanks simona but I've gone with Peter James as I needed to do the insurance there and then to bring the car back home and as far as I'm concerned Footman James had their chance and blew it.

As the car is not modified in any way I am just wondering if they are this uncompetitive in general. Are there areas they just don’t like or some other justifiable reason for them as the clubs recommended insurer being nearly double the cost because as a club member I would have liked to use them but not at double the money.

Perhaps it is time for the Club to approach FJ and find out what is going on.

That would be good as I’d just like to know why! :o

I may be wrong but I’d have thought I would be a near perfect customer for FJ to insure. Club member who has owned and insured Minor Travellers for seven years, 49 year old, no claims, no convictions, standard car.

Why almost double the premium for less cover (3000 miles as against unlimited). :x

Just to let you know that there is a system in place for MMOC members who are having problems with FJ. They should contact the club office, providing full details, and the matter will be taken up with FJ.

Well you can always contact them directly to complain if you wish, same as you can with any insurance company. Apparently car insurance premiums have risen across the board this year, with an average 25% - 30% increase, caused largely by the huge increase in personal injury claims. An injury such as whiplash results in an average £1,500 payout and underwriters are currently paying out around £100 for every £130 paid :-? My renewal is due next month so it will be interesting to see how much it goes up by - so far it has risen very little over the past 5 years.

My premiums have also not risen by very much,I think about £20.00 over 5 years so to be quoted nearly double the premium of a competitor by the clubs recommended insurance company came as quite a shock. What I’m wondering is whether Fj premiums are generally that much higher or is there a reason for my quote from them. The only evidence I have that it may be because of living in Manchester is that a friend and MMOC member 12 years younger than me living in another city insures three Minors one of which is modified on an unlimited mileage policy with Fj and pays only £3 more than I was quoted for one unmodified Minor on limited mileage. It was on his recommendation that I tried Fj and he was as shocked as me when he saw their quote.

Leafie - did you get an on-line quote or did you ring the dedicated FJ club phone number? I found that an on-line quote was quite a bit more than the one I got over the phone. Or it might be that your postcode is within an area that has had a high number of claims so this has inflated the premium? Best way to find out is to give them a call.

Thanks LouiseM,

It was an online quote during which they requested my MMOC membership number so ringing them should not really make any difference otherwise why ask for the number, although from your experience it clearly does. Each year I have renewed Fj have been about £60.00 more expensive until this year. As for reasons certainly not heard of any issues with classic car claims in any M postcode areas including mine which is why I asked if it is a Manchester thing.

There was a programme on TV the other night suggested new drivers in/around Bradford couldn't get insurance at ANY price ! So the Post Code very definitely can have a great effect.
