Strange coil

Post by Declan_Burns »

On my mate's traveller which is one of the last travellers built, There's a strange looking ignition coil with only one terminal mounted behind the glovebox liner. There is an armoured cable from the back of the coil going into the ignition switch. Has anyone ever seen such an arrangement on a minor or is it a bodge by some previous owner?[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

How odd - I assume the car has a 'real' coil in place to fire the Ignition? Maybe part of an anti burglar system - to give the burglar a 'nasty shock' !

No, That's the only coil. I believe Volvo had a similar arrangement but I've never seen anything like that on a minor and we don't particularly like the idea of having a coil where that is fitted. I'd prefer to see the coil on the inner wheel arch where it gets cooled.

The HT lead looks like it is just 'pushed in' - and I can't see how it works with just one wire connected ?? Where does the wire come from/go ??????

It seems that the armoured cable is the supply to the coil and the black cable should then supply the distributor. The pictures don't show how the armoured cable attaches to the coil. Is it at the back of the coil or is it just hidden by the HT lead? It also looks like a non standard ignition switch. Is it a non Lucas system lifted from another car? Does it have a standard distributor.

Neil,
It goes into the back of the coil. Distributor seems standard. It will all be coming out anyway.
