I've had the valves sunk in 320 thou just to be sure, I'm gonna have a look at re aligning the rocker and if it looks tricky ill buy one from bmc.

It will be very cheap, no doubt; this is the man who can pick up 940 heads for £5 a time

when i check the shimming of the springs i was going to measure the difference between bottom (near the collets) of exhaust and the bottom of inlet near and shim up the difference, but at what point do i need to shim, i.e is 5thou enough not to bother?

Yes - if they are wide 'solid' looking things - they are fine. And yes a few thou matters not a jot.

well ive made the shims, they varied between 18 and 54 thou. i couldnt manage to get a payen head gasket as the pesky suppliers couldnt get one. so i got a british gasket or bg automotive one. not sure which way to put it up? i reckon you must put it with the writing facing up, i.e against the surface of the head. any clues?? the only difference between top and bottom is the metal pressings fold over one side and there is a seam where they join on what i would say is the bottom, side without writing?

If there is a metal side, I would put this against the head, but it really doesn't matter. Smear of clean grease on both surfaces.

just found a couple of the valve springs on the 12g940 head are pitted with rust, so im going to change them, are 1098 12g202 springs the same?

NO! Much shorter. If the 'pitting' is just shallow - don't worry.

i will have to get some new ones as i think the pitting is too deep, better be safe than sorry, i lost a collet anyway so have to put an order in.

Yes - so probably need to source them from a Mini supplier - make sure they know for a 1275 /12G 940 head.

Yes - if it was a genuine 1275 Cooper S head! Just make sure it's for a perfectly normal 1275 / 12G940 head. Are they this triple groove type ? http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx? ... 774&title=

You are more than welcome to have my old sintered rockers and valve springs for free if you cover the postage. Couldn't be more than abot 5GBP as our postage is quite cheap.
