diff oil change

breaker bar. popped the plugs open. drained the stuff. there was oil in there. it was dark and swirly. a bit gritty. didn't like squirting the new ep90 in. nipped up the plugs hand tight with a small ratchet. runs even quieter and smoother now.

If it was dark and gritty - may be a god idea to drain and refill after say another 100 miles running.

true. good advice. I will check it again and see if the drained oil was gritty. no bits of metal or gears. amazing little cars. going for electronic ignition soon.

I just want to try elec ignition and see if there's any improvement in mpg and pickup. brief from not needing to touch the points. my advance and retard wheel is stuck solid too. milk keep the old distributor as spare.

greased the propshaft, trunnions upper and lower, ball joints today.

Sounds like a distributor problem not a points problem! Nothing to do with electronic or not, but it seems the cost of new distributors is the same for both?

what's the difference so far? better pickup miles per gallon, economy? did you plug it right in or did you adjust the timing wheel?

hi I've got about an extra 7 to 8 miles per hour tops,good pick up,mpg seems to be about 2 -3 better.

I fitted it mainly for peace of mind,after a brand new condenser went recently,plus it came with a new dizzy and a red rotor arm.

I changed the timing to 1 degree btc at around 900 revs,after test drives.

I keep the old fully workind dizzy in the boot with a strobe for the rac man/woman to fit if it all goes pear shaped.
However i fitted these kits when they first came out in the 70's and never had any trouble at all (fingers crossed)
So I'm hopeful modern ones are just as good if not better.

Adjusting closed or pitted points every few weeks/months does not appeal to me at all.

so basically, every sixty pounds of fuel, you're getting a free gallon. i will probably add one, you can always add a tipp ex mark to the distributor and the edge before you take the old one off.

That won't help - you will still need to adjust it to get the 'not quite pinking' point.

It's enough to get you home which would be the main consideration.
Fine tuning could wait I'd imagine.

but bmc, you could tipp ex pen the old dizzy with dogleg to the edge and then you would know exactly where to put it if you needed it again? that's my point. sure the new one would need setting up the way you mentioned.

or put a wooden coffee stirrer in plug one, when it's near the top, you should get a spark! tighten up the dizzy and you're done.

just another update about the oil changes, really lovely and smooth, well worth doing the diff. everyone should grease up and do their oils, well worth it!

But surely, if you fit a nice new electronic dizzy, you will never have to change it again! Have some faith!!

judging by the looks of my old dizzy they last a pretty long time. i am looking forward to every change i make, can see what is happening that way!
