Speedo cable replacement?????

Post by CHILEAN MINOR »

This is our first Moggie, and I need to replace the speedo cable. Ive got an original workshop manuan "The Morris Minor", by BMC, but does not show any info on how the speedo comes out. The cable is self explanitary, but can someone tell me how I can remove the speedo? :(

Thank you.

The speedo head is held in place by two screws - one on either side of the speedo head. Look in the glove boxes and you should see a small hole on the speedo side of each glove box liner. Using a cross head screw driver, you can locate the screws and give each a few turns. You don't need to unscrew them fully. Once loose, the speedo head can be pushed/pulled forward into the car and you have access to the speedo cable.

If you cannot see the holes in the glove box liner, then it is only a matter of a few small screws to remove each liner and the glove box lid and then the process is the same as described.

Good luck

If this is your first time then it is easier to remove the glove boxes, held in by four small screws on each and then slacken the two screws, one each side of the speedo. Do not remove the screws. You can then push the speedo out from behind and unscrew the speedo cable. The bottom of the cable screws into the drive gear on the back of the gear box so jack the car and support it securely on axle stands before going under to disconnect the cable.
When replacing the speedo head check that all the warning lights and panel lights are secure in the correct positions then slide the speedo head back in with the screws sliding in the guides, then tighten the screws.
When you are acomplished at removing the speedo you will see a hole in the top corner of the glove box through which you can put the screwdriver and hopefully find the screws
