Help with identifying my head

Post by gatsby989 »

I'm trying to identify the head on my mog. It's a 948 engine, and the casting on the head says CAM 4910 It also says 27 K 9

Can anyone shed some light on what kind of head this is, and perhaps how it compares with other heads that will fit a 948?

Thanks.

sounds like a normal 948 head to me. you can fit a 12G202 head off a 1098 minor with no problems. it's pretty much the same head, with slightly bigger valves, and it has a blanking plug to fit a temp gauge sender.

or you could go all-out and fit a 12G940 head off a 1275. if you can get one with the exhaust valves sunk enough to not hit the block, it's a relatively straight swap too, and much bigger valves 8)

OK, thank you. The casting number doesn't appear in the Vizard book and I've not been able to find anything via google.

If it's a standard 948 head, that's good... there's room for improvement. :)

Of course, finding any head here in the states may be a problem. Will just keep my eyes open. It is a long term project.

Are you sure it is a "9", not a bad "8"??
Just hauled my old my old Metro head from under the bench, it is marked CAM4810. The CAM numbers appear to be a much later series than the numbering system used in the Moggy days, hence my suspicion!(mine is also a lovely pale yellow!!)
If it is a Metro head, then it will work as well as the original, but as others will tell you- if you want the old girl to shift, fit a 12G940 head- worth its price for the built in big ports and higher compression ratio which would cost a lot of time and effort to come near by modifying a standard head!

It will be a 4810 - so called 'unleaded' head from a 998. No performance advantage - but does have better quality exhaust valves.... The seats are not hard - so it's not 'really' an unleaded head - but fortunately - that doesn't matter! If you do fit a 202 head - it needs a good 60 thou skimmed off - 80 thou would be better!
