Handbrake Cable Anti Chafe Gasket

Post by GPO_Van »

Hi
After renewing brake cables on two Morris’s, one with no anti chafe gaskets and one with thick paper stuff on the outside of the body.
3 questions
1 What size should they be, no photo in BM or CW
2 do the cables go under the gasket or between the gasket and cover plate
3 is there one either side of each cable
Thanks

No gasket on my handbrakes, just two plates for each cable, one either side of the prop shaft tunnel panel. No gasket in Moss catalogue

No gaskit on mine either as mike says just a plate on each side, if i were you i fit the cable between the gaskit and plate, so the gaskit is behind the cable.

Under - in your diagram. The gasket is intended as a water seal - but also should be soaked in grease.

Hi Alan & Mike
In Bull motif it’s part No: HBK122 but no Picture, no one else seems to list them.
In my picture above, the gasket under the metal plate is one I made using a piece of old leather belt, and as Roy suggests, I had put grease on the back.
Not having seen an original I was just not sure of size etc.
Thanks all for input
Anyone else got any more info?

Confirm that the gasket should be between the cable and the body, the plate goes over the cable. I have always used leather belts cut to size and greased lightly. Apart from acting as a seal, it also prevents chafe of the cable on the edge of the hole in the body. When not fitted, it's sloppy maintenance from sometime in the past.
