LCB / 3 into 1 manifold question

Interesting to see the Maniflow system. Presuming it's now fitted, can I ask how loud it is?

I bought it this week so it's still on the garage floor! I will fit it tomorrow. I hope the Maniflow is not as loud as my Magnaflow exhaust on my V8 Jeep!

For reference, I have just managed to locate a piccy of my homebrewed downtubes to fit the Metro cast LCB manifold onto the Moggy:-[frame][/frame]
This was created from a standard 1275 set of downpipes cut and shut(just a smidgen!!), utilising bits of the Moggy downpipe as well (not restrictive, as there are twice the amount of them!)

Oh yes - I remember that - it's very neat and tidy. And will work possibly better than an LCB for a mildly modified engine. LCB is really only for engines with pretty wild camshaft timing.

Nice. Why does it go 3 to 2 to 1 rather that 3 straight to 1?

that's the difference.

LCB means 'long centre branch'. so the two outer ones pair up, and then the centre branch joins the pair. hence the name!

the alternative being 3 into 1, where all 3 join together.

i imagine the reason for the long centre branch is that the centre pipe has to cope with 2 bangs for every 1 either end one has.

It was just for convenience - the better Mini engine exhaust manifolds ARE 3 into 1 affairs. Only really for Race modified engines, but worth another couple of BHP.

Nick88highline- thanks very much for the picture- it's really helpful. I'd be interested to hear what the noise levels are like when you've fitted it- I'm hoping if I get one, it won't be noisier than the 25 yr old stainless steel standard exhaust I've got at the moment!

I fitted the exhaust at the weekend and was very surprised when I started the engine as it was very quiet! It replaces a Bosal exhaust which had rusted away but I can't really tell much difference in terms of volume although the Maniflow system has a slightly 'sportier' note. Reports back from the girlfriend this morning (who drives the car 300 miles a week) are very good and it would seem the noise levels are no higher than the old system.

Overall it's a well made system which comes four pieces to allow easy fitment over the rear axle. The two silencers are at the end of the exhaust, so one sits just in front of the rear axle and the other just behind it. This means that there isn't much clearance between the silencer and fuel tank. There isn't much clearance between the manifold downpipes and bulkhead either. I'm using the original intake manifold (cut from the exhaust manifold) for the time being, but this needed heavy modification and welding as I had to grind through the bottom of it to make it fit!

Thanks for the update. Doubly interesting seeing as I have a Bosal system currently fitted to my car, which is much quieter than the (unbranded) exhaust it replaced. I'm considering mildly tweaking the engine that will replace the current lump in Maggie, so a freer-flowing exhaust is something I'd be on the lookout for, but I'm very keen to avoid it looking or sounding at all 'max power', or making the interior of the car any noisier than it already is!

Thanks for the really helpful update, nick88highline. Looks like it is a high quality bit of kit, and it fits OK, so that helps me to justify the price a little bit more easily! Good to hear (pardon the pun) that it's not too noisy either- like yours, our car gets a fair bit of use and it would drive me crazy if the exhaust was really loud. it's surprised me that it's not that loud of a system! I was going to buy this maniflow one as I wanted my car to be louder on tick over and driving. I probably have one made without the rear silencer. How does it sound now being 12 months later?
