Play in front wheel bearings

Post by nomisthewise »

Hi all ive fitted a new front wheel bearing on my van after experiencing play in the old one. I still have some play and so need to find somewhere i can buy a shim.

Can anyone suggest where i can find a shim please? And ifposs what size i need?

Many thanks

A 'shim' ? What for ?? The 'play' must be in the hub (or less likely) on the stub shaft.

Unless someone previously shortened the spacer between the inner and outer races...

OR, let's just check that these are standard Minor hubs, brakes, etc. and not discs?

There was another thread here about newer wheel bearings being metric and thus, ever-so-slightly thinner than the originals, and the advice IIRC, was to have the spacer a bit or install a shim between the bearing and the hub. Is this the shim you're referring to?

The original Minor 1000 bearings ARE metric. The problems with shims etc only start when bodge jobs with different size bearings and spacers are attempted...........
