Glad all is well again. Just a foot note, the guys who make CClean also do a disc de-fragmenter and a file recovery tool, both of which are great and free for home use.
PC's are a bit like cars really, a little 'preventative maintainence' with the right tools makes all the difference....

Re: Internet speed
Any cheapskates, like me, may like to consider replacing Windows with http://www.ubuntu.com. It's nice not to have to be too worried about viruses and I prefer it over Vista or Windows 7.

All well and good -- but terrible if you want to use any kind of widely-available software, like video games!Lord Anthony wrote:

You all are lucky, having a small(ish) country...on average you get a better connection. With 310 million people, the US sometimes has a hard time getting good speed, and that's after broadband upgrades that not everyone can easily get. 5Mb/s...at college I get about 2.9, and at home it varies but we don't have broadband (instead it's wireless, using cell phone towers), so it's more like 60kb/s. Upload at the college is 0.5Mb/s.

Re: Internet speed
tbf you can get most things working in linux using wine. ok it can be fiddly and you have to know what your doing, but it works.
the one thing you can do to rule out spyware and the like without the hassle of downloading and running a million programs is get hold of a spare usb drive and install this
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source ... 8RK9-QAT_Q
if that connects to the net and runs perfect then its somethign hogging up windows. if not then its an isp problem.
bit defender is also an excellent tool shoudl you require it. ofcourse another way to reduce your risk of getting any infections is to ditch internet explorer. may i recommend chrome. prettier and better.

Re: Internet speed
Just one warning DO NOT DO THE PIN IN THE BACK TRICK unless you know your internet user name and password as this resets the router to its factory default and you will have wiped out your connection and need to re enter all the relevant info, fine if you have a BT router as its automatic but a lot of older routers even need the country code set up for them to work so beware.

Re: Internet speed
Yup that will get him into the router but not onto the internet BTW other variations are 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.0.1 and other names are epicrouter and other passwords are admin, password and again epicrouter, used to fit em in the early days of broadband when nobody knew what they were doing !!! even had a guy bought a wireless roter then bought it back because he couldn't get a signal, tested it in the shop and connected straight away, asked him who his phone provider was and he said what phone, I aint got one, I thought as it was wireless it would just work...........oooops
