I know the gearbox filler is the wheelbrace size........ The diff drain plug needs a square - 7/16" I think. Sump may be 1" AF, or maybe slightly smaller. Take care to turn it the right way - and don't overtighten it. When doing the oil filter - make SURE the spring and plate are present under the element.

I can confirm the diff is 7/16" (or 11mm) square.

checked the filler plug. i put the universal swiss army thingamy wrench in the hole, is there usually a little bit of play on the wrench? i put a lot of weight on it anticlockwise several times, no joy. the car nearly came off the road. then i tried tapping the wrench with a little hammer, nothing. i tried soaking in wd40. it seems pretty tight. glad i tried the filler first, imagine if i drained the thing! any ideas? put some heat around it with a gaslamp or directly onto it?

That's an expensive toy just to shift a filler/drain plug. But - it will do the job!

It's hexagonal headed, don't get me wrong but I'm suprised that you can't just peer under and see what type it is!

i want to make sure i have everything to hand next time i get under there! (i am impatient)  and i got fed up with not having the right square heads for the diff. i have a set of hex heads and af sockets etc.

looks like i will need to ease the diff open after a warm run with a breaker bar, if it feels like it's not going to go, i will heat up the casing a bit.

You've missed my point. However that aside, you originally said engine oil---now it's the diff, in which case the plug has a square hole!

round plug square hole. doesn't get around the fact that I need an 11mm square and a hex socket for both!
