Crank bush
Hi Guys,
What is the easiest way to remove the drive gear bush in the end of the crankshaft? I need to remove/replace the bush so I can fit the needle rollerbearing used for the Type 9 gearbox conversion.
Cheers
John

Re: Crank bush
The theory says that you get a drift that just fits into the bearing, then fill the bearing with oil, place the drift into the bearing and hit it with a hammer. The hydraulic pressure then forces the bearing out. Personally I use a cold chisel or a drill.
Re: Crank bush
Another way to remove a bush from a blind hole is to run a suitable sized old tap down the bush and when it bottoms out... keep turning and the bush will be pulled out. ideally you round the nose of the tap slightly so it dosent gouge the bottom of the hole

Re: Crank bush
i used a drill that was slightly bigger than the hole in the spigot.
the idea was to drill out the middle and collapse it, but the drill dug in and spun the bush instead. that worked anyway, it freed it up, and then with a bit of metal bent into a hook, it pulled out.

Re: Crank bush
i cant recall the size of the drill, i just rumage in the 'drill bit box' and found one bigger than the hole in the bush, but smaller than the hole in the crank!
Re: Crank bush
Gauge it from the new bearing..... I know it's a roller bearing - but size will be the same......

Re: Crank bush
The spigot(inside dia) size of the bush is 1/2". I used a 5/8" drill, but as has been commented already, found it spun out so easily that I reckon the idea of grease and using a 1/2" punch or bit of wooden dowel to force it out would work fine!
Or.... You could just persist and get that 4th gear to stop jumping out, cheaper than a five-speed kit

Re: Crank bush
I've already got the 5 speed conversion kit taking up space in the garage and i'm currently(?) rebuilding a 1098 engine, hence the query.
Trouble is, the throttle cable has now snapped, so the car is currently immobile

Re: Crank bush
Use the choke cable to replace the throttle, it will do to move the car around.the throttle cable has now snapped, so the car is currently immobile "
Even adjusting the choke fast running screw up will let you move the car in and out of the garage.

Re: Crank bush
Just cut a bit off the outer ....... It's hardly a terminal problem! In any case - surely you have a spare in the glovebox ???
