Sump Leaks by Bootlid

Post by mike.perry »

Continuation of Eyebolt rubbers topic
Changed the topic for you
To continue and clarify, we are discussing leaks on the side valve engine not the A Series
Where bolts are screwed in to alloy castings such as the sump and timing chain cover, and also the dynamo mounting on the water jacket casting then provided the correct bolts can be aquired it may be possible to re tap the threads out to 5/16 UNC which would give a much courser pitch thread for the bolt to purchase on. The thread can be re tapped without drilling but the bolt holes will need enlarging to fit the larger bolt shanks

It's so long since I had the SV engines - but there must be a timing case oil seal? Surely the top suspect for leaks??

When I read the heading, I thought that you had moved the engine to the back of the car :o

For the uninitiated the oil seal consists of two bits of oily rope, one fits in the timing cover and the other in the sump. The crankshaft pulley is inserted between the two and the sump to timing cover bolts are tightened to effect a seal, (hopefully)
