tie bar spacer
bmcecosse,previously you mentioned tie rod assembly on a site i cannot now retreive, anyway did you mention a spacer being relevant to steering geometry,i looked for this spacer on my series mm workshop manual and dont see it.does it have a number.

examined car today, found spacer missing on n/side,fitted one i found in a drawer,also tie bar castled nut split,replaced with new nut and tightened up,also found n/side wheel leans into wheel arch but offside wheel quite straight,anyone got any answers.

Take a look at the eye bolts, there should be a thick washer between it and the chassis, not between the chassis and the nut.

both eyebolts have a thick u shaped recessed washer

The crossmember ends of the torsion bars should have thick u shaped recessed washers,
The eyebolt (into the front chassis legs next to the sump) should have thick plain washers.

I think there were some U shaped 'additional' spacer washers used at one time behind the eyebolt.... Bad idea because they don't keep moisture out. If a wheel is leaning in (at the top??) - then this indicates negative camber on that wheel. Now we learned a couple of weeks ago that Vettel uses just over 4 degrees negative (although I have to say it doesn't LOOK that much) on his front suspension - but this too much for a Minor....... It would 'grain' the inner edges of your super soft crossplies...... So - you need to try to give us an idea of just how much it leans in.. can only suggest standing the car on a dead flat surface - blow the tyres up HARD (to minimise sidewall bulge) - and put a spirit level vertically through the wheel centre and against the tyre walls - steering dead ahead. Assuming the level is leaning IN, move it slowly out away from the tyre wall at the top until it is dead vertical - and measure the gap....... Repeat on the other front tyre, then turn the car around on the same surface - and repeat the measurements. Tell us what they are!

My Series MM does not have spacers and from observations it appears that not all cars have spacers. I shall check in the morning.

I think the U shaped spacers were added when the top kingpin mount was changed......

i will endeavour to gain measurements,strange thing the offside tyre which is the one that is not leaning in has feathering on the outside of the tread,could hav e been swopped over at one time.

Neither of my cars has a spacer between the eyebolt and chassis, I just checked.

according to the mm manual there should be a thick washer inserted between the eyebolt and the chassis and a u shaped recessed one at the other end of the torsion bar,there is no indication of a spacer between the yoke of the tiebar and thefront of the lower arm,b y the way do you know of the size of the castled nut which secures the rear hub.

Don't know the size off hand - but if you are going to work on your Minor you will need an AF socket set, and a Whit socket set.

What i,m looking for is a really good mechanic near carluke who is willing to take over the few difficult jobs that i am unable to do as i have limited mechanical knowledge,there are no morris minor centres that i know off and special socket sets would do me know good,i dont mind paying for a job well done,maybe i should put in an ad somewhere.

There IS a Minor specialist in Carluke - Mr Train (no kidding). He used to do them for a living - but would maybe still be prepared to take yours on. I think this is his place -note Minor under the cover!

I know robert train well,sold him my set of series 2 seats recently,i live within walking distance of his house,unfortuneately he is not interested in repairing morris minors,he is selling off most of his old stock,i can carry out most simple repairs but need professional help with some stripped bolts.threads,oil leak,carb leak, antifreeze leak(water jacket cover)etc,etc

No bmcecosse,robert train has given repairing cars, ive asked him a few times and he does not want to get involved anymore,checked my steering today,quite a surprize ,on flat ground my n/side front wheel read not negative but vertical camber,bubble in the middle,but my offside wheel positive half a bubble out on guage,it would appear my garage floor is not level.

confusing now rear hub nut size,two answers,i have no castled nut on offside rear wheel so not secure,anyone got a spare,.
