series mm fan belt.

Post by bootlid »

I recently purchased a new fan belt for my 1950 series mm sidevalve engine,in order to fit this belt i had to depress the dynamo fully until it lay on the engine, also i had to do away with the slide bracket which one would normally use to adjust the tension,it took quite an effort with two large screwdrivers and turning the starting handle to fit belt on to the two pulleys,is this normal procedure.??

Maybe the fan belt was too short. The number for the long belt for the water pump is B33, does anyone know the number for the short belt?

belt recently purchased from club spares, would have to cut belt off as removal would be impossible otherwise, dynamo solid no movement upwards possible.

If it's too tight it will ruin the dynamo bearings..... It must not be 'taught'!

Is it just a normal V belt? Run a tape round it - with the adjustment set to the minimum and read off the length in mm.

690 / 25.4 = 27.1"

I meant - put a tape round the pulleys when set as they would be with the CORRECT length belt fitted....... You obviously need something longer than that 690 belt.

Maybe your dynamo has a larger (than normal) pulley fitted?

It turns out that i bought the fan belt from esm and not from club spares as i previously mentioned,i phoned esm today and they admitted not having the proper belt for a 918cc engine and just sent the next size(B26) which is too short, the B27 one they now list is not available.

After some research by Graham Holt he has come up with a size of B27 for the short belt with an outside circumference of 30.25 in.
The large belt is B33 with an outside circumference of 35.5 in
