Hi,
I seem to have ended up with 2 minors now, up from none two weeks ago!
One very nice series 2 803 in good order, and a 1966 1098
Was going to sell the 1966 1098, but now want to keep it.
It does need a decoke and stem oil seals which I'm getting help with.
The shells rattle a bit, though.
I know there are various ways of looking at it i.e.total rebuild, do mains etc.
I have in the past had an Ital, and a granada, both of which had the shells done,and lasted fine until I sold them some 3 years later.
I have reasonable basic mechanical experience, and I was on hand when the granada shells were done, engine in.
My intention is to have a crack at this myself, engine in.
Any helpful ideas or polite comments welcome.
I know if the crank needs doing, they may not last, but at 15 quid a set, plus my time and learning curve, it's got to be worth a try?

Whack a set of shells in!
As long as the journals are clean it shouldn't be a problem.
The rear main is the fly in the ointment, it doesn't want to come out past the rear engine plate.

I fitted a recon crank to a spare engine that I have just done up, as number 3 big end bearings where scored as well as the crank. I fitted a recon crank as it was to cheap not to !!

If you think it needs the crank regrinded, I can highly recommend this, as it is what I bought.

No harm in having a look - but if the bearings are scored in any way - the reground crank and a NEW oil pump is the way forward. Remove the centre main cap and have a look at it..... Shells are fine if the bearing journals are like new - otherwise - waste of money. Make sure the oil filter is fully operational.....
