MY S2 TRAVELLER

Post by hoseman »

Hi
Can anyone shed some light on year of manufacture of my early Traveller?

Reg UXJ 597
Vin 552033
Eng 8G9 R K83300
AD

This car is a complete basket case, will need full nut and bolt restoration, which i can carry out over time.
I read about the S2 that Tony Jenkins has in Minor Matters, May/June 2011, page 9

What interests me the most is the small wooden fillets in the rear compartment above the wheel arch!
Where these standard?
Mine has the same ones!

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks in advance

Paul

The chassis number puts the date of manufacture as October / November 1957. As the DLVA website shows the first date of registration for the car is 1st November 1957 I'd guess that it was built in October '57.

The engine code starting 8G relates to a replacement engine. Can't help with the wooden fillets above the wheel arch but I'm sure somebody will be along soon who can! Good luck with the restoration :D

It has not been taxed since 1993 so has not been updated. Should SORN be declared?

its not been taxed since sorn was introduced so there is no need to declare sorn.. this will of course change when it is re-taxed for the first time

Everything about it is a S2 tho. The indicators, cheesegrater grill, and thoes wooden fillets on the inner wing??
Ive had plenty of Travellers in my past, 6 at one time. need to dig deep for the log book i think.
Sorn doesnt need to be declared as stated because it was laid uo before it was introduced, but is liable one up for taxing!
Thanks All

Early grills were changed in Oct. 54 and Series 2 production ended in Oct. 56. Chassis no and registration indicate a build date of Nov.57.
What speedo was fitted and is it a split screen? Any photos?

I guess it must be a series 2, just one of the last ones. There could have been a genuine reason for it hanging around at either the factory or a dealership before finally getting sold. I think any Moggy is worth restoring.

It must have been hanging around a long time if it has a cheesegrater grill, unless the grill was retro fitted

I agree that all Moggies are worth rescuing, but she is bad. ive scrapped better basket cases!
All the floors and chassis are shot, all panels damaged, inside trashed by kids, bits stolen from her, wood like mush, not a straight panel.
Shes not beyond as all panels are available, im an engineer, but theres a time to say no and walk away.
My main problem is will she move without breaking her back!
I have a low loader trailer available but even thats going to be a mission!!

Thank you for all comments, please keep them coming.

WPR678B who posts on here rescued a series 2 convertible that had a very weak back and got it onto a low loader. May be worth PM'ing him and asking the very same question?

Taupe has also got a very good restoration topic going at moment. A good read for any future traveller restoration project. His appears to have been a basket case too.

Taupe has shamed me into restoring this car now!!!
Having just moved house and now have a double garage full of homey stuff that needs clearing. carboot marathon on the horizon!!
First job is to get in touch with DVLA and get history for car, then get it into the garage and dry out for winter stripdown!

Any Minor is worth saving. It just depends on how much time/effort/money you're willing to devote to the project.

It may well be that the car was built in '56 (splitscreen) built pre Oct '56, but then kept back in the factory (damaged on production line?) which could explain why it has a '57 production date.
