That does look ropey, do I spy a little tag near the seat?

I'd say it's seen a lot more action than might be expected, perhaps some "high performance" oil pump has been fitted?

Replace it I say.

To be honest - doesn't look too bad - I would just have polished it up and refitted it. Common mod here is to use a ball bearing in place of the bucket. Then it never sticks!

the bucket its self is very rough and wouldnt be worth polishing as the coating it flakeing
the spring is shorter than 3 inches, which isnt good. hopefully with a new spring and a bucket it should increase oil pressure

If the spring was short a new one has to make a difference, got my fingers crossed for you!

I thought you had already changed the oil and filter. No point changing it again - unless you think there is something wrong with the oil that went in ?

you still need to answer bms question as to the pressure after 10 miles of hard driving, thats when you will know if all is now well or need to investigate further.Cold pressure is no indication of the state of an engine.I've rebuilt numerous mgb engines and found that the main cause of low oil pressure was worn main bearings, they also have a tendency to break up inside the caps this shows itself as the so called death rattle at starting up after an overnight stand, the oil drains out of the main oilways and takes a while to get round the system.Hope not in your case.

right, fitted a new spring, cap and took it for a hard drive
cold oil pressure went straight up to 70
and when accelerating up to speed and holding road speed at about 2000rpm it doesnt drop below 50
the only time it drops below 50 is when i change down a gear when pulling up to a junction
but at hot idle pressure its between 30 and 40 but with a slight blip of the throttle it goes straight up to 50
what do people think??

My MGB is 45 on tickover and 55 at 2-3000rpm so yours doesn't sound that bad.
Gauges can't be that accurate , perhaps yours is under-reading (or mine is over-reading??? )
